Custom Joystick Configs?

I saw a few threads about this, but none were really conclusive.

Is there a way to make a .cfg file (or something easier than making my own cvs build :p) to just customize the joystick? It isn't too big of a deal (I don't recall Wing Commander or Star Crusader needing more than two buttons on the joystick. Of course, I never had the manual for the latter...), but it would be nice.

I recall that when I was playing Tyrian (forgot what I used to emulate that) that I could just edit a file and add in a custom joystick definition. After checking the dosbox wiki (and the actual folder), that doesn't seem to be the case.

So is there a way to make my own joystick configuration, short of making a custom CVS build?

Failing that, is there any documentation that says exactly what each of the included joystick configs actually do? I imagine 2-axis is just a basic joystick, but how many buttons? 4-Axis is probably one of those older dual-joystick thingies, but what of Thrustmaster (I ignore the flight stick. It may be well over 10 years old, but my Sidewinder is a piece of crap :p)?

2axis: 2 buttons, but enables 2 joysticks (the only mode that allows for this)
4axis: 4 buttons
flightstick/thrustmaster: needs special configuration of the game as well as
that (or a compatible) joystick

What exactly did you/do you want to reconfigure? Maybe you used some
configuration utility of the games you mentioned.

Basically, I just wanted to be able to have more of my buttons available to select from. Like I said, chances are nothing will ever need more than 2 buttons, but it would be nice to put some of the more common commands on the joystick (for what few games let me config the controls).

What do you mean by "more common commands"?
The next dosbox version might be capable of remapping joysstick buttons
to keys and vice versa, maybe that'd help.

Yeah, I think we are on completely different tracks here :p

2-axis supports 2 buttons
4-axis supports 4 buttons

Is there a way to make a custom one that maybe took 3 axes of input and 5 buttons (just a random combination of numbers) short of adding it in before compiling the cvs build?

Well the question is what you want to DO with the additional buttons.
The interfaces used by dos games simply have four bits, and you can
either distribute them to two buttons on two joysticks, or four buttons
on one joystick. Same for axes.
