Some XP compatible games like Crysis can use resources from all available CPU cores. Multiple CPU cores can also off-load additional background tasks from the primary core.

I think the QX family uses a Socket 771 vice Socket 775. The Quad Core models for Socket 775 run at lower clock speeds stock compared to the Duo Core models (you could overclock them though). They also run with higher power consumption.

AM3+ will have way higher RAM throughput due to the on-die RAM controller and CPU will be a bit faster as well... Around 1st gen i7 speeds if you go with a Bulldozer CPU.

As I understood, most XP games run on one core. So using the other one for background tasks will justify dual core... I don't think that XP would profit that much from 2 more cores.. but maybe I'm wrong.

XP was viable for gaming (new big budget games) until 2011/2012, plenty of games are going to use at least 2 cores, many will have some benefit from 3-4 cores,
it really depends on which games and which performance level you are targeting in the end...

Because they cost $250 and $800 while a E8600 costs $15.

Well if Quad core would really be an overall improvement... Then maybe a core 2 quad q9650 would be a good pick

Oh, I have a Q9550 too and the dual core seems much better for the games I play. Runs much cooler too.

First idea:
An ASUS P5E3 PRO with a Q9650 and a Radeon HD 5770..

I just don't like the x48 chipset. In fact that's the only Asus board that's failed on me, but that was a Rampage Formula.

QX9770 is LGA775 and QX9775 is LGA771. Super easy to convert a 771 CPU to 775 though. Just a sticker and trim the socket plastic so you can rotate the CPU.

any particular reason for that and not something like the i5 2500?
that's a faster and older CPU than the FX 4350, perhaps even cheaper to get.
XP support should be as good.

Ya... Both ideas no dual but quad cores .. 🤔.. rejecting later intels is hard to justify... Have to sleep a night and then think again...

Used a X3380 in my X38 Rig. But it's a rare CPU now. You can pin mod a 771 and get the same performance.

I build it in 2009 on a supermicro C2SBX and it still works.

Not a speed demon but at the time it was pretty fast.

However 100% stable and has never crashed on me once.

My XP build is an EP43-DS3L with a Xeon X5460 and an HD 7800.

AFAIK X38 and X48 can't run the Xeons, p45/p35 and such can,
and the E5450 for example would have a 80W TDP, the X varian a higher TDP

A few years ago I couldn't help myself. I recycled my super hypervisor server into an ultimate XP machine. My favorite Q6600/C2SBC blew up, so I thought I should build a 'last one'.

x38 and x48 were made to run the highest clocked 1333 FSB xeons. These were also the 1st platforms to run DDR3. The X38 and x48 were marketed as workstation chipsets. P45 is just a desktop chipset in the eyes of intel so Its the other way around.

P45 kicked the pants off of x38 and x48 for overclocking though.

My XP machine is an X5960 with a 780Ti. I consider it complete overkill for anything I would choose to run on XP.
