Another idea:
AMD FX-4350 - Mainboard ???? - Radeon HD 5770

any particular reason for that and not something like the i5 2500?
that's a faster and older CPU than the FX 4350, perhaps even cheaper to get.
XP support should be as good.

Yes... I just want to stay with 775 or AM3+ - I had a 775 system years ago and my recent build woke beautiful memories... Also I had some fun with AM3+ ... It is an emotional thing. 😬

Also I still take dual core into consideration..

Nothing clear yet... Except the choice between the two

-------

Having an additional question concerning Chipsets
P45 vs X48 ... The X is the better choice for crossfire support ... The P45 delivers better overclocking results... That's what I remember. Anything else?

Researching the last hours brought me really close to these two:

Core 2 Quad Q9650
FX-4350

At the moment I would prefer the AMD processor? Comparisons between these two look like the FX is a bit more powerful. So I think it will be no Dual but a Quad core... 😬
Which one would be the better in your opinion?

I am currently building an XP machine too
The motherboard and cpu were gifts from someone but are exactly what I was after.
Asus P5B-VM
Q6600
4gb ram
3870x2
500gb WD blue
XP SP3.

Nice.. I have also a Q6600 lying here (I tested it shortly but now I am very happy with E5800 in my recent build)...

For my upcoming project I would like to get the fastest possible (Dual/Quad) without choosing between my hobby and having something to eat (referring to insane prices of extreme editing CPUs) so the Q9650 looks like the best choice in case of Intel platform.

In terms of maximum achievable FSB - yes. But the truth is, you'll hardly see any difference with quad core CPU, they stop around 450-500 Mhz.

Comparisons between these two look like the FX is a bit more powerful.

Hardly for Windows XP games, which do not favor multi-threading all that much, but you can always upgrade later.

Hardly. FX-4350 has only two FPU units.

I remember something about that said in a video by phil... Don't know if it was exactly that CPU... You implicate the Q9650 would be a better choice?

if you are going the Xeon route,
AFAIK X38 and X48 can't run the Xeons, p45/p35 and such can,
and the E5450 for example would have a 80W TDP, the X varian a higher TDP

x38 and x48 were made to run the highest clocked 1333 FSB xeons. These were also the 1st platforms to run DDR3. The X38 and x48 were marketed as workstation chipsets. P45 is just a desktop chipset in the eyes of intel so Its the other way around.

I'm talking specifically about the lga 771 Xeons, they are blocked from working on the x38/x48 but worked on the other chipsets

have you considered Phenom II?

Both Phenom II and Core 2 Quad would be better. And overclocked to 4200+ Mhz Core 2 Duo E8xxx will win in most XP games just by raw IPS performance.

As I said, AM3+ socket is more interesting in terms of upgrades. You can easily repurpose it as Windows 7/10 budget gaming rig with FX-8350 or another FX series processor with quad FPU. And AM3+ is relatively safe to use when
it comes to Specter/Meltdown fiasco.

But you can push LGA775 (Intel or VIA platform only) to be functional in Windows 98 SE. Also E8600 is quite cheap and easy to overclock on most motherboards.

It's not an easy decision... But if I would go with AMD I think I would choose the Phenom 965.

If I would go with Intel I would go with both e8600 and q9650 and made my decision after several testing.

In both cases what Chipset/ Mainboard would be a good one for overclocking? I love the mATX size - so I would prefer this.

I have already a Sapphire 5770 vapor-x here... That should be a good card for this project - all three CPUs should handle it without problems I think.

I've been searching available boards yesterday... For AM3+ it looks like the gigabyte 78lmt USB3 would be the only suitable matx board that can support overclocking sufficiently... There is also an ASRock but am not sure about that (970m pro3 I think)...

I found an Asrock Board... G41MH/USB3 R2.0.. it seem to have some oc profiles in its BIOS... Whateva that means..
Could I overclock the E8600 or Q9650 well on this board?

---+-!;:';+&+
Looks like the choice of a processor is way more easier than a good Mainboard 🥸🙄🙈🥴

The manual for that Asrock G41 board doesn't list an option to take the FSB beyond 1333MHz (later revisions of the BIOS might allow it though). You might have trouble overclocking if the CPU doesn't allow a higher multiplier .

ADDED: The E8600 would perform pretty darn well at stock settings, though.

Meanwhile the ASRock isn't an option anymore.
I think a Mainboard with p45 Chipset seem to be the best choice... Unfortunately I didn't find a mATX Mainboard until now...

If you're looking for a nice P45 ATX board, I think my Gigabyte EP45-DS3L rocks. You can take the FSB to 1600MHz with matching DDR2 memory, and adjust the CPU multiplier lower (in half steps) to match the stock speed or to overclock.

Since you already have a Core2 Duo rig, what would a C2Q bring for XP games? The fun in lga775 quads is getting a cheap lga771 Xeon e5450 rev E0, modding it to lga775, and overclocking to 4ghz on a good P45 board (I used an Asus P5Q). But a cheap E8600 C2D will overcklock even easier, and with less heat and/or noise. Games that benefit from quads are well into DX10+ territory, and not for XP. And in those games, even a heavily overclocked C2Q will lose badly to a mildly overclocked AMD FX 8350.

I would suggest getting a good AM3+ board, with a 990X or 990FX chipset. Then you have all kinds of fun options.

Those chipsets support both SLI and Crossfire. You can combine two 7900gtx or x1950pro graphic cards and toy around with old school multi GPU setups.

You can run FX or Phenom II cpu. Not sure between a dual or a quad for XP games? Get a triple core Phenom II x720 BE and overclock it. Want to run newer games? Get an AMD FX and overclock it.

Many AMD processors are unlocked, so overclocking is simple.

AMD also doesn't arbitrarily disable CPU features like Intel. For example, virtualization acceleration. So you might even build a Linux rig on AM3+ and experiment with GPU passthrough for virtualized Windows.
