Luckytech P5MVP3 Rev 1.3, slow boot and won't detect OS on HDD

Just bought an retro kit comprised of a Luckytech P5MVP3 mobo w/AMD K6-2 500MHz, SB Live 5.1, 64MB of RAM (in reality a PC133 128MB stick that gets detected as half its capacity), a 40GB WD HDD (unused for now until I can get it going enough to flash a 64 or 128GB BIOS on it) and (strangely) a SATA LG DVD-ROM drive.

For now, the test bench looks like this:

-AMD K6-2 500
-SYE/LT P5MVP3 mobo (recapped with Rubycons and a Sanyo near the cache chips, EC19)
- 256MB PC100 SDRAM (2x128MB)
- MSI Geforce 2 Pro 32MB AGP
- WD Caviar AC1210 212MB w/ Win95
- LG 4165B IDE DVDRW

Issue: Board will POST, detect the IDE HDD and DVD drives successfully, than hang for a long period of time (nearly 5 minutes) before finally showing the system configurations screen, where it will take another 5 minutes before it finally slams a INSERT SYSTEM DISK error. If I unplug the HDD, it will boot fluently up until the same Config screen where it will stop at "Boot from ATAPI CDROM" and do nothing, despite not having any disc inserted. This happens on both IDE channels.

Any clues as to what should I do, besides literally hotflashing the BIOS on another mobo? (Zida LX98-AT)

CD Boot apparently doesn't work either - it will show the drive reading (used a 2K SP4 disc for that) but will still stay at the Boot from ATAPI CDROM screen.
I'd try floppy boot... if any of my floppy disks would work in the first place.

Regardless of the issue at hand try and get at least a Win98 boot floppy. It's extremely useful for troubleshooting to have a couple of bootable floppies.

What BIOS version is currently installed?
Can you limit the HDD capacity by setting jumpers on the back?
Do you have another known working CD drive to boot from?
Have you tried different IDE cables?

Sorry, I mistakenly assumed you were trying to boot off the 40GB HDD. No need to limit size on a 212MB HDD. 😅
Try using different IDE cables and try using the other IDE channel.
If both fail you can try disabling onboard IDE and using a PCI-IDE controller if you have one.
Also check your current BIOS version and wether it's right for your board revision.

Try IDE/SATA PCI controller. Flash latest bios with corret file for this motherboard, hdd or working floppy disk.

Hotflashed it with the Rev D BIOS. I can now boot CDROM, but HDDs still have the same issue where they get stuck after detection.

marxveix - the only controller I have on hand is some Goldstar (I think) ISA controller from a 486, and I'm not sure if that even works with newer boards.

You can try different, smaller hard drives, like 20gb or smaller ones. I had one socket 5 machine that did not like any hard drives that i had (3.2gb up to 10gb, no luck). After i flashed newest bios, it did take up to 8.4gb.

I have also just one pci controller at the moment, via6421a with tweaked memphis bios, at least it did work with 500gb sata hdd in my socket7 mvp3 build.

I even tried a 2.5GB HDD (Caviar 22500) and same thing happens. Original BIOS supports up to 32GB, the BIOS I downloaded and hotflashed supports up to 128GB.

I have two identical boards ( P5MVP3 Rev 1.3) and they don't have this problem. They work with any disk I throw at them.
So I'm pretty sure that your particular board has an issue. Any visible damage on it?

About two very slightly bent pins on the SB, but which seem to go to the AT/ATX jumpers are what I just noticed now. I'll try bending them back very carefully and check if there's any change.
