An earlier one, Baryon? Pretty good gfx for its time but distinctive low-ish quality, 8-bit-only music.

Ha! Baryon wants to so much be like Raiden when it grows up! 😁

Gameplay, power ups, enemies are incredibly close copies... not that's a bad thing!

Not to mention that it's a lot better than the unplayable Raiden DOS port!

Urgh... tell me about it. I fired it up for the first time ever on my 20MHz 286, and the ship just darted about from one side of the screen to another. Far too fast, yet also somehow with less frames of animation than it felt it should have.

There was Raiden port for DOS.
It looked terrible compared to the arcade version, but still better than anything PC.

I'm less offended by the graphics of that port than I am at the sub-optimal control/input responsiveness, refresh/frameskip and general lack of playability.

Compared to the Jaguar and PC-Engine versions it is horrible.

Have a look at Taito's Darius Gaiden: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darius_Gaiden

It isn't mentioned in the Wiki article, but my Windows copy was published by Interplay.

DariusGaiden is beautiful, but scrolling is not smooth.

This description/review indicated that slow-down is typical of console versions, but that isn't necessarily true of the PC release:

Most of my experience with the game was seeing it in arcades, and I really can't remember how the PC port compares. Unlike the Taito Legends 2 release, the PC version is not an emulation.

Many of the suggestions I've gotten have a kinda "traditional background" if space then dark and stars.

The way I remember the game it was more brighter colors. Like the example I've made with stardust,
but instead of black then white/grey and other colors.
