I do reckon if I buy one any time soon, it will end up being a collection. But hopefully somewhere a bit nearer. Or possibly where we can meet halfway.

though i would refuse to buy from them based on the fact they're selling over priced scuffed up crap, i'm guessing you're in lewes from the facebook ad you posted, im a bit further along the coast between portsmouth and southampton, i wouldnt chance it, morecambe is more than halfway across the country, also shipping a heavy crt for only £11.95 does seem cheap even for royal mail.

Those would have been packaged in boxes and foam specifically shaped for the monitor and designed to withstand the perils of shipping. Not to mention shipped in containers where they would typically be stacked and secured.

With second hand shipping, you're rolling the dice in how it gets packaged and transported.

No, I'm not in Lewes. I'm from a small hick town called Uttoxeter in Staffordshire. Miles away from the vast majority of those Facebook listings. ^^; Even if I specify the distance, Facebook's amazing algorithm still lists towns/cities miles away, like London. Or shows me CRT TVs as well.

More than likely its been punched a dozen times too over the years.

If the shipper is liberal with the expanding foam bags, it should be fine.

There's also insurance.

The only thing with these old tubes is that plastic may have gotten quite brittle. Even though it is well packaged, they may get such treatment that the plastics can't handle it anymore. The biggest problem is that the plastic case has clips to support tube to the frame and motherboard which has relatively heavy flyback transformer with bunch of other components and chassis works as a structural element. If those support clips break during transport, practically everything becomes loose and damage may be extensive.

But yes, you can ship CRTs and it can be done succesfully, but there are always risks related to it. Years ago I personally bought Amstrad CPC color monitor from France and it was shipped well packaged (huge amounts of bubble wrapping and it was packaged tightly so it couldn't move in the box) and it arrived intact to Finland.

When I bought both my CRT monitors, I drove my car personally for both of them. It took a couple of hours and a couple gallons of gas, but it was worth it and I got them home safely. But I understand you don't always get a chance to get something suitable in acceptable range. Good luck getting what you wish for!

On that note though, I've just seen this tower on eBay, which is right on my doorstep. 😁 I've asked some questions about it, such as some of the components it comes with, but this could be a possibility.

Hmm. Well, looking on Wikipedia, yeah, that tower is more suited to the 810 series. It would be the XPS or V series I'd need. 🙁

Yeah, I need some suggestions for a case/tower. I'm really not sure what to look for and I clearly can't just go for any old beige retro looking one.

So, any ATX tower should be fine, right? But ideally one that's period correct for a 440BX? Even a micro ATX tower?

Sure, ATX case will house those 440BX ATX boards. MicroATX will be fine if you get MicroATX motherboard, there are quite few of them with 440BX.

It's down to whatever board you end up getting. We're still using the ATX standard from way back then. A micro ATX case is limited to a motherboard with four slots. More than that and you need a full sized ATX.

Brand manufacturers (Dell, Compaq, HP, etc.) often use customized case design, so the regular ATX board will not always be installable without modifications. That's why I'd prefer to choose from regular OEM cases or branded ones, but with a standard (m)ATX design.
Dimension L500c from link has i810 chipset, without AGP slot, which make VGA card choice more expensive, harder and limited (you need PCI graphics or onboard weak in chipset).
