AM2+ Phenom II X4 3.2Ghz performs very close to s775 E8600. See Re: Any love for AM2? . There is no matching dual core from AMD from that era.
Not sure if SLI is worth it, based on experience of other people it is a mixed bag Re: Socket 939 dual core build. Decisions, decisions.... . SLI setup frequently does well in synthetic benchmarks but offers very small benefit in games.
