Hi All,

I just built my retro gaming PC with Win98 SE based on P4 2.4, and GeForce FX 5700 Ultra GPU.

While the system is very stable and other games like Quake run smoothly, NFS’s are not.

So far, I tried 2 versions of the drivers, 81.98 and some older one that came in GPU CD, I didn’t recall the # but it was from 2003. I must say the original worked better; I saw way less NFS games freeze.

I’ve been reading that those games are less compatible with newer cards and there are some DLL replacements that may fix GPU/drivers issues.

Does anyone know anything about it? Please let me know.

TIA.

I made a mini guide for replacing the DLL files.

Also, for your 5700 Ultra, I recommend using Nvidia drivers 56.64. Going higher than that may reduce compatibility with older Win9x games.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Core 2 Duo E8600 / Foxconn P35AX-S / X800 / Audigy2 ZS
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 980Ti / X-Fi Titanium

Like Joseph Say Is probably a driver problem. I have tour same graphic card and with driver 56.64 I resolved a lot of problems with old games like M1 Tank Platoon II and MechCommander

Thanks for a quick reply. I forgot to mention that My DirectX is 7.0 atm. Let me see if I can do your method.
Another issue I had with NFS4 HS only, it wouldn't work with D3D mode. Can it be just driver?

I'll try after work, this gives me a hope!

I think ver. 56.64 brought some stability to NFS series. I will make another thread but if anyone know why I cannot run NFS4 HS via daemon tool? It seems doesn't detect a disk.

Do you already have a disc drive connected ti your motherboard? Maybe the game searching the disc in first disc drive that it find. Try to burn your iso on a cd and use it with your real drive

Yes, I do. I've installed it first thing after all drivers, and I have an original, not pirated box. Then I realized that it needs CD all the time and installed daemon tools.
The image isn't from that disk thought, it refuses to take an image on the software I used on a modern PC. Saying something like - cannot rad the block. But CD isn't scratched.

I've re-installed the game from an image from archive.org and it worked. But now it doesn't. Verry odd.
