So I've got carmageddon 1 on a real cd, a pentium 166 PC with working CD rom drive, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get music to play during gameplay...

The cdda music exists on the disc, I can readily play it with CD player programs.

The game's readme file says you must do the maximum size installation in order to get the CD music, as otherwise the game will be pulling too much data off the CD for the music to work... So I've done the maximum size install.

The set sound program tells me to configure a soundcard for sfx and midi (but no options related to CD audio). Anyways that's all configured properly and sfx work in game with no trouble.

The music volume slider in the options menu is at a reasonable level.

Cd audio in other dos games such a Screamer and Ignition are working properly. My cdrom drive is in good condition and I have an appropriate cable for CD audio going to my sound card...

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you running the game in true DOS, or within Windows? PCGW mentions that "On Windows, CD music might not play correctly".

Which drive letter does the ODD have (D: is recommended)?

The drive is E, as I have two partitions on my HDD.

Interestingly, I know from previous experience that you need to run the game with the CD in the same drive that is was installed from. So if it were something where the game needs the CD drive to be D for some reason, I think I'd need to reinstall it after relettering the drive.

I was running it in Windows 98. I'll see if it works better in dos. I'd tried it in dos on a different PC before and wasn't able to get music to work there either, but the CD drive on that computer was flakey so I chalked it up to that.

OK...so check first DOS and then the ODD drive letter thing.

Ok neither of those things worked... But today it seems my CD drive is having trouble reading the game disc in general, with the game freezing during fmvs. I burned a copy using an image I got online, but my drive isn't reading that copy any better, so I guess it just isn't meant to be with my current drive.
