Hello,

I tried to install MS-DOS 6.22 on a toshiba satellite pro 410cdt using a CF card but it didn’t work (constant blinking cursor at startup… with grub4dos it did the same) so I used my friend Freedos cloning an other card I have which is Grub4Dos + Freedos.

And it boot but when grub4dos screen is supposed to come, there is a black screen instead, and after a few second (probably the timeup for auto starting Freedos), there is vertical yellow lines with infinite symbol on it… it seems like it’s crashed, not only the screen because if I type shutdown it does nothing and in Freedos it is supposed to… shutdown.

Any ideas ? This computer doesn’t have cd rom drive or usb but there is a floppy drive. Do you think installing MS-DOS 6.22 with real floppies could resolve the problem ? I don’t have floppies so if it can help i would have to buy floppies and a floppy usb adaptor…

I also have a high pitched noise problem but I saw in a forum it was probably due to a capacitor in the screen. I don’t think it’s related to the graphic problem but who knows ? When in bios and before grub4dos, all text shows good and no graphic problems… they start with grub4dos

I found the solution I replaced grldr 0.4.6 from grub4dos to grldr 0.4.4 and it worked ! (And also switch to dos=HIGH to dos=LOW in config.sys) Sorry for asking and finding the solution just after, it took me all the night 😂 but maybe it will help someone…

For the high pitched noise, it is probably the same problem as here https://forum.vcfed.org/index.php?threads/tos … ld-it-be.80453/ so I will try replacing the part. I don’t know at all how to open the screen…

For the high pitched noise, just remove the 35v 10uF capacitor and clean the area on both sides with a cotton bud soaked in isopropyl alcohol - because it leaks and electrolyte gets under nearby parts including smd capacitors which can really mess up the inverter.
I've not seen the purple cap fail, just that 10uF 35v cap so try that before replacing the purple cap.
Re: Toshiba Satellite 200CDS

Good that that weird problem you described is just a software issue 😀

Also, using an external screen other vga doesn’t work… I tested with 3 different vga screen and it never worked… when I try it on an other vintage toshiba, the satellite 320cds then it works, but not on the 410cdt. Do you think it’s related to the inverter lcd noise problem or not ?

Nah that's probably bad solder joints on the surface mounted VGA port, which sits on a little sub-board. It could also be the flex cable that connects that sub-board to the main PCB, but I've come across what you're seeing on my Satellite 400CS and re-doing the solder for that SMD VGA port fixed it.
