I am currently using a Dell 2007FP IPS monitor for old games and I love it. But I was wondering if it can get any better. On Amazon and other pages you can see industrial 4:3 TFTs and they all advertise 75 Hz and fast response and IPS. The usually range between cheap 100 EUR and expensive 500 EUR (beetronic). Has anyone dared to test these new TFTs and if so, are they good?

Also, is it somehow possible to get OLED 4:3 screens? I mean retro gaming has come a long way and with all the newly produces hardware like dreamblaster, midi wavetables, gus cards with usb support, one might think this is the next logical step to have superb 4:3 OLED with 100+ Hz refresh rates. I guess that would have a lot of potential customers (console emulation, dos, windows 9x gaming,.. ). Also there is self service PCB building on the internet now so why not "customize your screen by selecting panel and frame"...

Interested to see if anyone has more information.

As far as I know, 4:3 OLED screens in the size of a conventional monitor don't exist.

This apparently came up during the development of the Checkmate LCD monitor. They looked into the possibility of OLED panels, but they would have had to been custom made and require a minimum order of 50,000 units.

If you want to see what is available, you can always check https://www.panelook.com/

I'd be careful about screen refresh rates being advertised. Some monitors advertise support for 75Hz, but that doesn't mean the panel itself can display 75 Hz. Some of these monitors may achieve this via frame skipping.

Even my current LG 38" ultrawide monitor does this. It advertised up to 75Hz, but the panel only runs at 60Hz.

I don't understand why nobody can't just build a 4K 4:3 monitor with built-in CRT screen shader software...

Windows 95 | Chaintech 486SPM M102.A | AMD-X5-133ADW or Am486DX4-100 | 48MB SIMM FPM | ATI Rage 3D II+DVD | CT4100 | 8GB CF

Windows 98 | Acorp 6BX86 | Pentium III 900, slotket | 512MB PC100 | Radeon 9250 | SoundForte SF16-FMI-03 | 64GB MicroSD

Because the panels don't exist.

edited to add: Slight correction in that Arcooda does offer 26" and 35" 4k 4:3 displays. However, those are designed for arcade usage and not for desktop PC.

Arcooda is one of the few companies still focusing on retro displays, although their focus is more on arcades.

They are apparently working on a modified version of the Checkmate monitor, except with their own panel and internals. They'd promised specs back in March, but no updates since.

Last I heard, the tariff situation with the U.S. had a significant impact on their business since they are an Aussie company and the U.S. is a big customer.
