I've been continuing to look on eBay to see if any cheaper 3.06GHz 533 P4s appear on eBay, and recently I just saw a Pentium 4 Mobile HT at 3.06 GHz appear...
What would be the downside of using this over a proper desktop 3.06GHz P4? The cache size seems to be the same, and it's for the same FSB speed, and it's also around £60 cheaper (around £20 and not £80)...

and, if it is worse than the desktop version, how would it compare to just a 2.8 GHz P4 with the same FSB speed?
Also, would it even be compatible with non-mobile motherboards?
(for reference, the only motherboard I have right now that either would go in is the ASUS P4S533-VX, a Northwood/Willamette-only board from an old Sony computer my family had, with a 533MHz FSB speed. Techpowerup states that SL726 is Northwood, so I do wonder if it'd work...)

I want to see just how far I can push my motherboard, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to drop £80 on a Pentium 4 just yet, so if that mobile CPU works and with similar performance I think it'd be an easy choice.

If I remember correctly, the only notable difference between the two is that the mobile variant includes Intel SpeedStep, allowing the CPU frequency to be switched between a low-power 1.6GHz state and its full rated speed. The mobile CPU should boot on a desktop board, but without SpeedStep support in the BIOS, you're likely to be stuck at 1.6GHz all the time.

Either that or flat out.

My initial guess would be full speed.

I think these mobile P4 run at minimum multiplier in desktop board.... so pretty much useless. Which is the reason for lower price.

I recently looked into mobile Pentium 4 setups. I came to the conclusion it's not worth it in part trying to get a compatible motherboard and/or adapter, and the issue of potentially running at the lower clocked multiplier.

In the latter scenario it would make more sense to get a lower speed desktop P4.

I think I'll go for either a 2.8GHz or bite the expensive bullet for the 3.06 GHz desktop one, then. Thanks.

The difference between a 2.8 and a 3.06 is not life changing.
