Courtesy of that awesome dude DonutKing, I gave my 486 box a little upgrade.

The rest of the system and photos can be found here, there's not been any visual change, really, so I won't upload more pics: Finally, my perfect 486.

What I've just added is:

Gigabyte GA486-AM Motherboard
AMD 5x86 133MHz
Diamond Stealth 64 PCI VGA (Replaces ET4000AX VLB)
Realtek 8139 PCI NIC (Replaces 3C509B ISA)

I also scored a bitchin' full-tower case for my Dual MMX Box (also from DK), pics below.

As it arrived:

My drives installed:

My dual MMX rig installed:

Things to do: Replace 3-digit 7-segment display, oxy-clean front plastic, sand and re-paint top metal panel.

Yeah, it's massive! Interestingly, there are no 3.5" drive bays at all. Every bay, front-accessible or not, is 5.25".

Another cool thing about this case is that the LED display is a full 3 digits, too, not just a "1" plus two other digits. Some of the segments don't work though, so I'm going to replace it. 😁

I once had a case just like that but in better shape, got it for free off a thrift store in Dallas but sadly on the way home the door broke then when moving to a different city two of the wheels got busted. Eventually put it on the curb as I didn't have the space for it when I last moved. It had no yellowing at all, one of the redundant power supplies had a short :s

Its a great case and weighs more than most AT cases that people could hope to find.

What a huge case! It rocks!
And what are the specs of the dual-headed monster inside it? (I'm jealous already)

It's a 5.25"-3.5" bracket from a PC/XT, but with a 40GB Seagate Barracuda mounted within. 😀

All will be good so long op watches out for those psu getting too hot but then again who can brag about having 600w worth of raw AT power 😮

230W

Though it probably sucks 600W from the mains, being so old! Haha!

That case looks comically large compared to the motherboard. What software would you run that takes advantage of dual-MMX CPUs? Win NT4 is pretty useless these days. Maybe some form of Linux?

With NT4, Photoshop 6, some version of Pagemaker and Illustrator 9 along with a generous collection of fonts, that large dual MMX box would still be pretty viable as a graphics workstation provided you have a good monitor and video card.

Oh well, mine was different in that regard. Had two hotswaps inside that huge cage that were 300w each and connected to a back plane with a single edge connector. Would beep like hell until I hit the little red button on the back when powered with only one unit instead of both.
