Long story short, is it dead? 😄
Recently I picked a Montego-II PCI card with the digital add-on and the 4mb Cancun FX wavetable. Sample pictures are here (middle of the page)
http://www.yjfy.com/Museum/sound/Turtle_Beach.htm

To test the wavetable I simply mounted it over an existing Creative Vibra card (it had a MIDI WT card before). No MIDI music in Windows98 + Doom II...
I removed the Cancun and mounted a small test wavetable over the same setup. Worked, MIDI music OK.
Same Windows, same Doom II, same settings everywhere!

So, does one have to use the Cancun with its own PCI Montego-II card? And/or initialize the wavetable properly with its own drivers?
Or use 'GM/GS' MIDI type selection in the autoexec.bat (I could have missed this line...)

Or is it simply dead?

Thank you for your educated guess, All.

Wavetable DBs don't need any special software. I suspect that yours is damaged or that it is indeed just not working with the Vibra. You should post some high rez photos here.

Thank you so much for the tip. I'll try a CT2230 or CT2290 SB-16... Used these for testing wavetables too...

(I have no intention to use it with the original card, really. PCI is a problem 😀)

OK, likely I will make a couple of (parting) photos of this set. Though there is nothing remarkable, it looks like new.

I have a Cancun FX Mithloraite, and have tested it with four different sound cards - ESS 1868, SB16 MCD CT1750, Vibra SB16 CT2960, and Turtle Beach Santa Cruz (where it's currently installed). It's worked in all four, and as swaaye said does not need any kind of software - just plug it in at it just works. Do try yours on other sound cards; if it works then it's OK, if not then it's dead.

Here are two pics of mine to compare them with your Cancun FX:

Thank you so much. I also thought it should not be too special to get it detected and working. Yes I've tested it with two cards, a later Vibra by Asus & the classic Creative SB-16 CT2930. No MIDI.
Did some photos before returning this set:

Looks quite new - nearly no scratches found. Well does it speak against TB quality?

Did it, please see the links above. The photos are clickable.

What one should be cautious about, here?
It looks pretty nice. The scratches are tiny and don't touch any traces as I could see it.

Finally, using another card (SB16 ct2230) did not help. The set was returned.

P.S. Well I once read how Cloudschatze miraculously cured a LAPC-I... by setting some convoluted pins straight around some chip (these were bent by poor storage and touched each other) and it started working. But here I see no bent parts or anything wrong.

I have to agree, it does appear to be in pretty good shape. One of the scratches in the back does look somewhat worrisome, since it appears to go across one of the traces; it's hard to tell without taking a good, closer look first though.

I think it's more luck of the draw Mithloraite. I've had my Cancun FX since I bought it from Voyetra Turtle Beach back in July 2000, and it has never failed every time I wanted to use it. I don't even store it in a proper manner - when I don't use it I usually plug it in one of the spare sound cards I have, like this:

It has even outlasted my ESS 1868, which died quietly in 2008.

Ooohh, the pain......

Check if the SMD tantalums are either dead short or open.

Can anyone provide a patch list for the Cancun?

Also, what year was it issued and how much did it cost?
