I'd say this is an Intel or AMD 486 processor.

I am almost certain it's an Intel 486 DX2 of some kind. Clock unknown and I can't be 100% for obvious reasons. If you plug it into anything, start at a low voltage (3.3V) and clock and turn the clock up until it won't go any further, just in case it is the lower voltage DX4.

Heh, you might be lucky and discover it's a DX-50 or something, or you might (and will more likely) just have the classic DX2-66 - still a great CPU and from a practical standpoint, the better of the two.

Yours only dont have the intel copyright mark. But numbers and letters are on the same spot.

I think its an DX2 50 / DX2 66 or an DX4 100 mhz.

If the posted picture is actually processor, i think it isnt a 100Mhz one if it didnt came with a fan on it..

Because 66Mhz and lower can operate with a heatsink only, the 100mhz requires a fan also.

Another thing I noticed was whoever had this processor before had connected two of the pins together.
With a tweezer I managed to straighten the inside pin back that had been flattened to touch the outside pin.
I have put a green rectangle over the two pins that were connected before I straightened one back.

Do any of you know what this modification would have done?.

Probably nothing short of preventing the CPU from starting up. It was most likely just a pin that was bent by accident, good catch straightening it.

Short the Vcore circuit to ground and probably damage the motherboard.

... unless I've missed something, according to the datasheet I have for the "Embedded Write-Back Enhanced IntelDX4 Processor", those pins on the 168 pin PGA package are Vcc and Vss. I have no idea why anybody would intentionally tie those together. But if it was accidental, then that at least makes more sense. Good thing you caught it.

I realize this isn't exactly the same CPU as that document was written for, but since it's the same packaging, I doubt the Vcc/Vss pins are that different. I'm looking at Intel doc 27277103, page 10 (PDF page 14).

I happened upon this chip in particular the other day as well. It has a fan on top but I think it's aftermarket, and I know from the pins it's a PGA168 chip. There is no maker's name printed on the heatsink and I can't pry the heatsink off the chip without damaging one, the other, or both. As you can see from the picture I have some pins left to straighten, but once they're done I have no reason to believe this won't work.

When looking at the back of the cpu and comparing them with those on http://www.cpu-collection.de/?l0=co&l1=intel&l2=i486%20dx
It looks like it's mostlikely a 80486 dx2 66. It has a attached heatsink, the distance between the cpu pins and the centre dye looks the same, and it has that short gold line on the top right of the centre dye.

The only other cpu i could see with the same distance between the centre dye and the pins is a 80486 dx50 but this hasn't got a heatsink attached.

Neato! Now to find a board to run it with... later. I don't have the money to throw at it now.

The motherboard I bought got delivered (Asus PVI-486AP4 rev1.6). I was surprised this 486 motherboard had a bios as recent as 11/25/97 (Award BIOS v4.51G ). The cpu works and booted up , it is a 486DX-50.
