Ordered one of those last Dreamblaster S1 boards a few weeks ago, but didn't get to install it until now. You can imagine my disappointment when it turned out that none of my ISA sound cards got a Waveblaster header...

I do however have a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz I've been planning to replace the SB Live used as Windows sound card with at some point anyways, so why not do it now. The Santa Cruz got a Waveblaster header, but is of course a PCI card.

The sound setup in the computer is gonna be an AWE64 for DOS sound, and the Santa Cruz for Windows sound and hosting the S1. They're both connected to the same receiver through a passive mixer. I'd rather not load any drivers for the Santa Cruz in DOS if it can be avoided.

My questions are as following:

1) Will the fact that the Santa Cruz is a PCI card make it less suitable for MIDI in games launched from DOS?

2) Will I have to load the DOS drivers for the Santa Cruz to be able to use the Dreamblaster from DOS?

3) Should I give up this idea, and just get myself an ISA card with a Waveblaster header?

1,2) The CS4630 does not do MPU-401 under DOS, I tested it a few days ago. 🙁
3) You can always get an Terratec ESS Solo-1 card with WT header depending on what chipset you're gonna use it on. Some Vortex 2 cars also got working wavetable headers and are less chipset dependent, but requires a TSR and have worse/emulated FM synth.

Oh, well, perhaps not the answer I wanted, but thanks anyways 😀 Tested the S1 hosted by the Santa Cruz in Windows, works great there at least, after finding out that the midi daughercard volume slider was set to mute by default 😁

Well, if I have to get another ISA card, why not get the best possible one? I'd look for something with as good SB compatibility and as little noise as possible, just as everybody else. Guess the ESS Solo-1 fits the bill since you suggest it? The chipset is 440BX, shouldn't be any problems, right?

The Solo-1 is a PCI based card (should support DDMA mode with no TSR on the BX chipset), but there's been some talk about the ESS AudioDrive (ISA) here lately, maybe you should dig in one of that threads. Also Yamaha YMF71x cards like the Audician 32 Plus looks like a good deal.

The YMF-71x ISA cards are a good deal and some of the best and most compatible adapters.
