I was thinking about taking an image copy of the HDD because I believe the PC is in its original condition and I would like to save it just in case.

If it don't have any propietary shenanigans it should work.
Your modern board needs an IDE controller obviously but as long as the HDD shows up in the BIOS and has an older file system than what your new computer is running I don't see why it wouldn't read. Just have an antivirus running in case of surprises and you should have no trouble talking to it.
Back in time, I used a bootable disk of Acronis True Image (v7 ?) to create disk images of IDE drives..

I haven't had luck with pre LBA drives on USB and IDE<>SATA converters, but if the mobo has IDE it works.

If you find a "modern PC" that has IDE, sure why not?
Yeah by "modern" pc I meant Pentium-4 😀
Figured out my Acronis true image 2018 USB boot stick does not work on this machine. simply freezes on boot worked on many other newer machines.
what a shame.
Can anyone suggest a bootable CD/USB tool that can take an image of the HDD and put it on an USB stick?

Clonezilla is bootable and should be able to do it I think.
Acronis booted while I was posting the previous message 🤣.
It was just slow I guess

I wouldn't use Acronis (proprietary .tib files = ick). I think I used something off the Ultimate Boot CD to image my old IDE drives (40-400mbish) without booting an OS in 2008 but forgot which one it was that dumped to an .img file.
My point wasn't to convert it to SATA but that older versions of Acronis are compatible with IDE to make the image.
Acronis wouldn't be my choice either but the OP appears to be familiar with it.

I remember I had issues restoring a backup to a slightly smaller drive using clonezilla. So this program is a no-go for me.
Acronis seem to work just fine.
