Is it safe to use this type of drive in a computer as a disk? I don't think they're designed to have the head whip around continuously like a desktop disk, but to write sequential dates as they were snapped by the camera.

They were at least able to do iPod level thrash, though that's mostly at the lower end.

This also worries me a bit.
I suppose DOS is not as cruesome as Windows 9x here.
DOS loads its drivers at boot, one by one, then it lets the HDD on its own.
16-Bit Windows or GEM/GEOS are similar, I guess.
They idle along happily ever after.
Edit: The table is fascinating, though! Over 11k cylinders in CHS mode! Yikes. 😬

I actually was not able to get it going on the particular model mobo that I am trying probably has a 500 MB limit

That's a possibility, yes.
Maybe it's also related to ATA-2 specification or 8-Bit transfers.
One reason why XTIDE uses CompactFlash is, that Compact Flash is related to PCMCIA and PC Card, I think.
Compact Flash specification allows certain things like 8-Bit transfers, which normal PATA HDDs nolonger support.
It's one of the many reasons it was so popular in embedded and single-board computer (SBC) use.
Anyway, the Micro Drive is related to the Compact Flash ecosystem.
Maybe it can do these things often, too.

Any problem using EZ Drive? It will autodetect the CHS for you, and the volumes and geometry will be compatible with USB readers.

...and, IIRC, Apple openly said that you could repartition any iPod (temporarily losing its functionality as a player) to use as a boot drive for your PowerPC Mac 😀
Or, of course, you could have turned on disk mode and used it as a "normal use" external drive...

It’s not a biggie. It does work in a 8-bit isa xt-ide
I mainly wanted to document the screenshot for others who might want to use it.
I actually did end up humorously killing one of my microdrives in a speedsys benchmark. The funny part is that it was the new one that I just got not the one I have booted ME from for years. Lol
