Guys, just an update: As it was suggested above I bought Duron 900Mhz and some no-name cooler for it. I made sure radiator is properly secured and …. despite that I used some contemporary substitutions for all those old VRM’s MOSFETs and I recaped the whole VRM and I flashed in the new BIOS ….after all this the motherboard worked and Duron survived!
I’m sure mobo was all good even before I started replacing things.
The whole issue was just … me 😀
(Now I got two working Socket-A motherboards)

Looking at Socket 370 and 462 datasheets they look pretty much identical. Socket step height is defined as 2.55mm. I was sure AMD cores were lower than Intel ones, but AMD lists Athlon height at 1.917mm REF and 1.777mm minimum, Pentium 3 1.787mm minimum so no difference there. The only option is either putting radiator backwards, or using Tualatin radiator - those have either none or much shallower cutout because minimal heat spreader height is above socket step.

Great, congratulations the work in the end was a success!
Although it is possible that the first two CPUs, would still be among us, with a little more attention ⚠️ in installing, I imagine that now you will be curious to try a third Athlon XP, but if the Duron 900 is enough, you can very well leave that one.
For my part, I hope to restart soon, a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP and an Athlon XP 2800 333, we'll see hopefully soon the final result, a success would be perfect.

I bought a board with a Athlon 1400. Came with heatsink slanted like that and a lot of thermal paste.
When I removed the h/s I wasn't believing it actually survived.
Cpu is 100% ok and well. The core didn't crack which is almost as incredible.

Looks like it depends a lot from a motherboard. I never manage to destroy any XP Athlon on my Abit NF7! Even without a cooler.... Many times i tried without cooler just to see if the board will beep or not, and i have never destroy the CPUs i tried.

That's impressive.
There were plenty of crispy AMDs back then.

Not something to emulate.
