Dear Warlord, any chance to get you time for writing a complete step-by-step guide on how to set up sound and music in DOS? Tomorrow I'll have Toshiba Satellite 2805-S401 with Yamaha YMF754B-R and S3 Savage/IX 8Mb, and such a guide will be a time saver!
P.s. at first I thought that https://www.philscomputerlab.com/ is dead, but looks like i have to use VPN to visit if from Russia 😮
Hi !
Okay i did that, everything seems okay under windows ! i could lunch Doom, DEscent, PRince of Persia, etc etc all ok !! with either GM music (very nice) or OPL3, and both with sounds, great !
But what about pure DOS games ? I still have irq problems on DOS mode, it doesn't seem there is a solution for this mode 🙁

Okay on DOS i did what you told :
For Dos.
1. You have to use the modified 810/815 driver I'll link.
2. The SET Blaster Parameters. are SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T4
3. I already configured this in the driver I am going to link here. But if you use the one off Phils computer page you need to change somethings to get it to work.
4. If you use some other driver than the one for here. Be advised that the one from phils has the wrong environmental variables set up in the batch file and you need to change that.
5. To configure you go "YMFIRQ 11" without quotes at the command prompt.
6. Type SETUPDS Change it to S-IRQ and then you can change it to I7 220 D1 ETC. With the driver I will link it should already be setup for you. Then save.
7. Then to run the driver you type Loadtsr at the command prompt that's all.
But it doesn't work. In SetupDS, with S-IRQ, it doesn't recognise any IRQ i select and can't save.

Post screen shot of microsoft system information. And did you use the driver I linked and put it in C:\Yamaha
You can try inserting a fresh DS.INI and see if it lets you change things. That will undo the settings. in DSSETUP

Now when i try to use your files in C:\yamaha and the last ds.ini you gave :
First launch the ymfirq 11 :
Then i launch setupds.exe and i have this :
Then i change to S-IRQ and modify IRQ to 7 :
But i can't save with the typical error message :

In Windows, i installed the VXD driver and changed the legacy IRQ to 7.
Every thing is working like a charm ! I can play Doom, Descent, Tie Fighter, Prince Of Persia, Dune either with OPL3 music or XG music, its great !

Hello, I've been messing around with my Toshiba Tecra 8200 computer for a few days trying to turn it into a gaming platform, with demoscene and AdlibTracker support. This forum has helped me solve some significant problems, so I decided to share some insights 😀
First of all - forcing games to play sound through soundblaster. I have only the newest FreeDOS installed, no Windows.
So, in my FDAUTO.BAT I have entries:
SET BLASTER=A220 I11 D1 T4
SETUPCH.EXE /s
to maintain compatibility with BIOS settings.
And I also disabled serial/paraller ports in BIOS to free IRQ 5 and 7 ports.
SETUPCH.EXE is modified SETUPDS.EXE for this particular soundcard.
SETUPCH settings are pretty standard, "INTA" mode (S-IRQ wasn't working, it was telling me that there are still some conflicts with interrupts).
With this basic setup I am able to launch Adlib-based software (like AdlibTracker2) and demos that let me choose IRQ 11 at startup.
Now for the games, the SWAPIRQ you mentioned comes to the rescue.
For some titles (Mortal Kombat 2) it is enough to change IRQ to 7.
SWAPIRQ /i11 /i7
But for most other titles, it is necessary to manually change the BLASTER variable afterwards.
So before launching the game I execute this script:
SWAPIRQ /i11 /i7
SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1
And then it works! Of course the game needs to be configured with appropiate IRQ port.
Depending on the game it can be IRQ 7 (Worms) or IRQ 5 (Warcraft, SuperFrog, Day of the Tentacle).
Hope it helps! 😀

😀 its been a while, since i used my old tecra8200, today i wanted to Play monkey Island from DOS - it worked after loading the Yamaha tsr (No swapirq in this Case) and starting mi1 with
Monkey.exe v mo a
(For VGA, Mouse and adlib)
But the Midi Sounded Strange.
Just wanted to add, that IT works Well, If younstart win98 with vxd drivers First and than you Go to DOS and load the Yamaha tsr.
Have fun playing old stuff 😀

icebear wrote on 2020-09-06, 13:24:Hi, just tried doom under DOS and got the same problems. Doom doesnt even start and hangs , if swapirq is present.
Anyway, doom runs fine under win98 with sound and music, if you have the vxd sound drivers installed.greets
Just found out, that doom2 (i used Version 1.9) works in DOS, If you are using the yamaha drivers, but without swapirq.
Just Set the Blaster variable manually to IRQ11 and it works!
Set Blaster=A220 I11 D1
PS: @Doom2: i Set IRQ:2 in Setup, seems Like the Blaster variable overrides the settings in setup.
In Startup doom2 says "sb Not responding" but it works anyway.
Another hint for tecra8200, playing direct3D Games in windows98:
Use Powerstrip 3.9 to disable vsync (under Performance Profile) - that helps to get acceptable Performance in Halflife and blueshift @640x480
Hey everyone, I also have a Toshiba Tecra 8200 and I'm running into the same issues when trying to launch a game in DOS protected mode. I gave up and installed the VXD drivers on Windows 98, which let me run some games (though others need WDM drivers to work).
One game I just can't get to run is Screamer Rally—the setup won't detect my sound card at all. Any advice?
