Greetings,

ALTERA LP6 and 386 with NT 3.51 and MAX+PLUS II 9.32

I've found an Altera LP6 ISA device, some MAX5000 and MAX7000 series programming modules. I installed some software and the main point is the hardware. If anyone needs help in programming some old Altera devices, I may have what is required. Letting the community know, and there is still someone around who can perform the task. The pictures limit what I have acquired. I've installed NT 3.51 with a 386 machine and all is working well.

Very neat !

I personally use a homemade JTAG cable for MAX7000S and other Altera parts that have JTAG, but the JTAG-less vanilla MAX7000 I program with a TopMaxII. If I had one of these things that you do, I would be using it for sure hahaha

With that setup, can you unlock the JTAG pins on MAX7000S? I got 10x 7032s a while back and nine of them did not respond via JTAG...

I've always been interested in the old ALTERA software, but never managed to get my hands on a copy. Is there a "schematic capture" mode (where you can design using 74xx style logic) or a floorplanner style mode where you can view/edit the placement and routing? The 7000 series were quite small by modern standards so I'm interested in what the design workflow was like. Aren't the Atmel ATF15xx series more or less identical to the 7000? Would be really neat to design circuits with the vintage software and then program it on the Atmel devices.

I've received some EPM7064SLC's that had a different Device ID ALTERA96 (00) rather than the common ALTERA97 (01), which seem to be engineering samples for laboratory use, which the LP6 and adapter would program.

The LP6 and adapter should not have issues reenabling the JTAG pins for use as long as they aren't some strange engineering device. I've not purposefully locked any of my EPM7032S/EPM7064S/EPM7128S devices to test, but I plan to perform that, soon.

A person can use ALTERA programs to create a POF then use POF2JED (Windows only at this time) then use an Atmel programmer for the ATF150X series. There may be some weirdness in the JED, so may need some work, but it can be done.

I had some questionable EPM7128S devices, but sent to plasmo a while back for investigation. Some say a resistor and certain voltage and all that. Never have seen it work here. Deep in some thread, someone asked Altera/Intel how to unlock one, and the response was an NDA was provided then and that was the end of that thread.

Also, meaning the JTAG ports for the S devices are used, ya need the old gear, too, to free them (Listen to Donald in the aforementioned URL).

If you find an LP6 ISA card, grab it.

PL-ASAP2 works with the LP6 ISA card.

The other option, which I've not seen, is the PL-APU which is USB. 🤤

Hey everyone, I've been lurking for a little while and I figured it was time for me to join.

I recently became interested in programming CPLD's handle the conversion of data originally intended to go to proprietary DACs. Outputting i2s in the process.

I've successfully handled that aspect of my project but now in the wake of all of that I've ended up with a few CPLD's I'm unable to program.
7 EPM7128ELC84-815
1 EPM7160ELC84-15

I learned a bit later that these do not have JTAG and I had impatiently ordered them prior to realizing I cannot program them very easily.

I was curious if it were possible to hack together some sort of parallel programmer or if I should just give up.

I was very surprised when I learned only the S series had JTAG and I guess I had to eventually learn to fully read datasheets prior to spending money haha.

Nobody has yet figured out how the parallel programming method works. It is in my todo list to see what goes on when my (friend's) TopMax II is doing the programming operations but it has been a low priority, especially since my non-JTAG chips are slowly running out and any "new" ones replacing them are gonna be JTAG capable.
