2. FOREX chipset 386 & 486 hybrid motherboard
It is a Global Computer Networks FOREX 386/486 with mediocre performance, no more performance tuning options in the BIOS, and a memory read and write speed of only 12MB/s.

Interesting, how do you switch between the 486 and the 386? Do you have to enable one or the other in the BIOS?

Use 386: Remove the 486 CPU, set the CPU type jumper, set the FSB jumper to 66.
Use 486: Install 486CPU, set CPU type jumper, set FSB jumper to 33.

No BIOS setup is required

ah the good old days of physical jumpers, viruses couldn't infect your bios if the jumper was physically in the wrong spot.

Ok, and if you set the jumpers WITHOUT removing the 486 what happens?

KT333A rev CD motherboard with what looks like a few bulging caps. Gotta scratch that "maximum powa" itch for 3.3v AGP (Voodoo 3 3000). Current KT266 motherboard is limited to Athlon xp 2000+
SD2IDE capped at 33Mbps but is really stable, KT333 is full 133Mbps so may use ssd again but found ssd's are generally unstable compared to sd card

Yes, I tried that, and while installing a 486DX-33 processor, I set the jumpers to use a 386 processor, and turning on the power nothing happened, no self-test, no alarms, and no post code were displayed.

Asus 6600GT Silent Cool - 6€
HD2900XT - 20€
Gigabyte K8NS-Ultra Bundle with CPU and cooler - 20€
Albatron 6800GT - free from a friend for repairing a motherboard.

Some finds in Germany.
Also working on a 9800 Pro 256MB GDDR2. Very rare model. Proving to be a difficult case. Just installed 8 memory chips from a Quadro FX1000 (aka FX5800) GPU. One defective chip remaining. 😁

I thought I was scoring a decent deal with this Creative 24x CD-ROM box... but it turned out to be a hidden gem. Inside was a fully functional CR-562B dual-speed drive from 1994 (along with original manuals and disks for Sound Blaster Pro).

Nothing truly amazing, just got this haul of old mice:

The attachment mice.jpg is no longer available

Top left is Logitech bus mouse, then two Microsoft serial mice.

Bottom row I have Microsoft Inport bus mouse controller, a MS Bus mouse and a MS PS/2 adapter where you can plug the bus mouse and connect it to a regular PS/2 mouse port.

It was neat to find the Inport card, mouse and adapter in the same haul. Bus mice pop up relatively rarely at least where I live and when they do, it is usually just a mouse or then the controller and I have never bothered with them.

I have already tested the serial mice and MS bus mouse with PS/2 adapter and they work fine. If I have time tomorrow, I slap the controller card to my 386 box and see if that works too.

Does anyone know if the Logitech Bus mouse will work with the Inport controller, or do I need a logitech controller for it? I couldn't easily find a definitive answer. If the Inport card works, Logitech mouse should work with it, but it doesn't, then I know that there is a problem with the mouse.

Logitech bus mouse should work with an InPort. I had a Logitech working with a machine that had an integrated InPort.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Kerbside find: Twinhead Netstation...

Judging by the wires coming out the back the CMOS battery has been hacked. Hopefully it's not too messy in there!

After the last CRT fiasco I surprised myself with a Tulip monochrome, it's surprisingly light. At least this one had the cable included.
I'm wondering, why did some manufacturers use the 6DIN connector on their mono monitors when the IBM display adapter used the 9 pin version?

Could it be that some people put their monitors in serial ports? I don't know if 9-pin serial ports existed at that time or only 25 pin serial ports.

AFAIK it wasn’t that uncommon and Philips also used such connector in some of their hercules/mda models (that monitor can be a rebranded Philips tube). I also think that those monitors were usually supplied with a 9-pin adapter, but those are naturally nowadays mostly lost to time and often are missing from the monitors.

Why did they use other type of connector? Most likely those monitors were also sold for other applications, such as bundled with some terminal, sold for some micro computers etc. all of which used different connector. It was the same with Philips CM8833 series, where some models had 9-pin connector for both TTL and anolgue RGB (like my CM8833-mk2). You can directly connect your CGA or EGA card to that connector with standard 9-pin cable, but for analogue RGB you usually need to use either an adapter (often SCART in old continent) or then make a custom display cable that connects the 9-pin on the monitor to whatever the source uses as video output (often some type of din connector).

This one was originally paired with the Tulip AT compact and that shipped with both the MDA and the CGA option. I've yet to see a MDA card with a 6DIN connector but this has the original 6DIN-9pin cable included.

Good explanation, the same chassis was probably sold to multiple manufacturers based on application and the 6DIN connector was cost effective.
