How does that work? If muted poster's post is the last in the thread, it shows thread as not having new messages? And hides the muted poster's posts?

No I think it still tells you that there are new posts, but it just shows the muted poster as a line item like so:

<shit poster's username>, whom you muted, made this post. Display this post

"Display this post" is a link which lets you see the post if you want to.

You can try it temporarily on any random frequent poster to see how it works for you. It doesn't (of course) notify the muted user and it's very easy to unmute someone from the control panel -> manage muted users.

I also use Windows 98 on the Internet today without an antivirus, and I'm writing this message right now from it. In 5 years of active use, there were no problems at all.

However, I can't vouch for Windows 10, as 99.9% of viruses are written specifically for it (and won't run on Windows 98 or lower, requiring you to "update Windows and try again", "install .net 4.5+" or "switch to the x64 edition" ).

I've only ever gotten a virus from my own actions (downloading), even back in dial-up days. I routinely check my connections with Wireshark just in case, it's also a good way to see if you've successfully hindered Microsoft telemetry. I use an older version of it on Windows 98 from when it was called Ethereal, and I haven't had any unusual connections. What browser do you use for 98, or do you use WebOne? I've used WebOne, I tried K-Meleon 9x but it only loaded a few sites properly. JavaScript doesn't seem to work properly on it.

Guys,
Get with the times and meaning of modern American Slang.
What I mean by “Killing it” is that with Win-10 which comes in 32-bit and 64-bit
And is capable of running on allot different computers with only 4gb of memory and minimum
CPU Microsoft is Dominating the computer industry.
Also with Win-11 Microsoft is Obliterating the Compitition

Reminds me of the 1990 and 2000 when Microsoft was King

What I mean is Microsoft is back after the win-8 fiasco and early years of Win-10 blue screens.
I have NOT seen a Blue screen of death on my computers in years
And I heard Win-11 can actually fix itself now ?

The “idea” of “plug and play” is actually a working reality now and works
Pretty good on Win-10 and Win-11

When someone says “killing it” in American Slang it could mean “They are So good, they are Dominating the entire idea”.

I got a infected on my Win7 computer in the last week, first one in over a decade!

Totally my fault. I was been lazy and using that PC to search for something on the web.
It was pong ponger malware, nothing too destructive but I should have known better.

All the other PC's sitting on the same network without some idiot browsing sites are still fine.

I downloaded a version of qttabbar on github a while ago that turned out to be a virus, I reported it but it's still up. That was the first time I had any virus since 2011.

Almost every MSFT OS had bluescreens early on due to driver issues and others.

Win10 is pretty good at it too. Just a few days ago I suffered a user profile corruption due to an unlucky crash. It would log in with a temporary profile, and eventually wouldn't get to the desktop at all. A few reboots triggered automatic repair, after which everything worked fine.

It worked well since XP at least.

But, but.. I'm from Europe and I've once learnt real, British English in school. 🥲
Well, more or less. It's hard enough to surpress all the "gots" and not mix-up AE/BE specific terms all the time here.

Edit: Another such US slang term that comes to mind is "lady killer".
The majority of my fellow citizens would probably instantly be shocked
and think it's about someone who actually kills women, like Jack The Ripper, rather than being a "womanizer".

Don't know, but there's one important thing that comes to mind in terms of gaming.
Right after installation, it's recommended to install the June 2010 DirectX Runtime.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/deta … ls.aspx?id=8109

This will provide better backwards compatibility with DirectX 9 and 10.

Even works for ARM64 release, which then uses x64 files through emulation.
Since no existing DirectX files are overwritten, this seems like a fair tradeoff.

Note that some users reported that the old runtime must be installed before running a DirectX game first time on Windows 11.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows11/comments/1 … /?show=original

Installing OpenAL also shouldn't hurt, there's an installer supplied with Unigine Tropics bechmark, I remember.

PS: It's also possible to install WinG SDK by the help of OTVDM.

The original was open-source long ago, current version is not. What remains in the wild are presumably forks of the old version. If I'm not mistaken, older versions were much simpler, newer go beyond just tabs.

The current original is hosted at: http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/

Explorer got a new quirk since Win10 1903 if I recall correctly that has effect on QTTabBar, if you have one or more folders open, then try opening Control Panel, the old window with your old tabs will be gone and you'll have new window with just Control Panel. At least that happens if you enable the option for new windows to be opened in tabs, which I personally have all the time. At least on Win11, I'm observing Control Panel is always opened in separate process, even if you don't have the option enabled to launch folder windows in separate process. Maybe that's what started happening with Win10 1903, but I didn't notice, I usually have this option on...now I'm trying to reduce RAM usage, but it doesn't seem to be helping much!

I really don't like MS breaking random things that worked OK, but what can we do? They even set their antivirus on shell enhancement tools some of us like to use!

Yes, that era of DirectX is weird and comes with bunch of functionalities not part of the base runtime. Why Microsoft doesn't just include them by default?

There are also old Visual Basic DirectX runtimes and Retained Mode runtime for old DirectDraw based D3D, which they dumped with Vista, along with replacing functional DirectMusic scripting DLL (dmscript.dll) with a broken one, even though the old one seemingly still works fine on current Windows versions.

The heck happened? Why is Win7 slowly rising and Windows 11 declining?

Something went terribly wonky in the sampling method? I can scarcely imagine a scenario where Win 7 makes a comeback over all the alternatives, including sticking with Windows 10, Linux, or begrudgingly going along to Windows 11. Especially not without some noticeable viral social phenomena that I couldn't possibly have missed.

Microsoft is rolling out the Extended Security support program now.
Its FREE if you have 1000 Microsoft Rewards points
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/rewards/about

I am good for another year until Oct 13, 2026

Oh, what a great chance to spend 30 bucks for what should have been provided for free! Thanks Microsoft!!!

Just noticed the new "Enrol" option on my Windows 10. It's free here, apart from the fact that they require you to log on with your microsoft account (so it's free but not free). I don't know anything about reward points, they are not mentioned.

So out of my 6 win10 machines, so far I've enrolled on 3 of them.
