Further P4 overclocking/testing has resulted in a final configuration of 4.8GHZ and a 7900GS graphics card.

I'm pretty happy with these results!

Crazy to think that from 65nm to 10nm barely any clock speed was gained

I built:
Convert old ASUS ASC boardviews to KICAD PCB!
Re: A comprehensive guide to install and play MechWarrior 2 on new versions on Windows.
Dos+Windows 3.11+tcp+vbe_svga auto-install iso template
Script to backup Win9x\ME drivers from a working install

The computational power is MUCH more though.

Even in the last 5-7 years the work achieved at the same clock speed for a given core on a current gen CPU is several times that of a top end CPU of, say, 2017. I'd rather have a current gen desktop CPU of 2024-2025 than a Xeon from 2017.

Clock speeds haven't increased massively, but you're right; tick-for-tick real world performance most definitely has. And more cores for the same price - what's not to like?

I'm probably reached the final configuration of my P4 retro rig. I've replaced the 7900GS with a 7800GTX that has a funny little PCB bracket at the end which extends it to full length.

3dmark 2000 - 28350
3dmark 2001 - 28190
3dmark 2003 - 16781

I'll probably get around to doing some video card overclocking this weekend, it's already been a long day today. I've also backed down slightly on the CPU clock by about 50MHZ for improved stability.

So GTX is so much more powerful than GS that it overshadows the 7800-7900 difference. Confusing 🤣

If it's dual it's kind of cool ... 😎

Looking at the specs I figured it could go either way but yeah the GTX seems to be faster.

I've been trying out overclocking some Presler 945s recently and I found one that will do 4.1Ghz at 1.265v (C1 stepping), all the others barely scraped by at 3.8-4 with 1.35 or higher vcore including some D0s which are supposedly better for overclocking. I actually thought my motherboard (AW9D-Max) was the issue at first since upping the chipset voltage and loosening trfc as far as possible made some a tad more stable.

Is it common to get that kind of overclock out of them? I think based on some of the posts in this thread I just got really unlucky with the first few I tried.

Just out of curiosity, why were skt 603 & 604 xeons excluded from this? They were also netburst.

There's at least one result from an So604 system, so I'm not sure they have been excluded. There's probably just not so many of them ..?

Taken form the original post:

That's where I got that presumption from. I confess I didn't read all 27 pages. I have a pretty good stash of skt603/604 workstations... They were a fun era in my personal experience. Era of the space heaters! I remember my dual Irwindale @ 3.8GHz system (which I still have) back when it was flagship....dead of winter, it seriously kept the room warm...and then there's Paxvilles!!

Oh, I see you're right that's the text. Apparently, I missed that 🤣

But in the same post, there's listed a Socket 604 system. Unfortunately the links to the posts are broken, so it will require some manual work to find it, maybe there was some elaborating explanation around it.

We later added socket 603 and 604. ACL what the only one who posted. I will no longer be updating the scores. Life is currently too busy.

No worries and I completely understand about life happening! Good luck with it all; I hope it's positive stuff.
