Further P4 overclocking/testing has resulted in a final configuration of 4.8GHZ and a 7900GS graphics card.
I'm pretty happy with these results!

Crazy to think that from 65nm to 10nm barely any clock speed was gained
I built:
Convert old ASUS ASC boardviews to KICAD PCB!
Re: A comprehensive guide to install and play MechWarrior 2 on new versions on Windows.
Dos+Windows 3.11+tcp+vbe_svga auto-install iso template
Script to backup Win9x\ME drivers from a working install
Re: The thing no one asked for: KICAD 440bx reference schematic

The computational power is MUCH more though.

Even in the last 5-7 years the work achieved at the same clock speed for a given core on a current gen CPU is several times that of a top end CPU of, say, 2017. I'd rather have a current gen desktop CPU of 2024-2025 than a Xeon from 2017.
Clock speeds haven't increased massively, but you're right; tick-for-tick real world performance most definitely has. And more cores for the same price - what's not to like?

I'm probably reached the final configuration of my P4 retro rig. I've replaced the 7900GS with a 7800GTX that has a funny little PCB bracket at the end which extends it to full length.

I'll probably get around to doing some video card overclocking this weekend, it's already been a long day today. I've also backed down slightly on the CPU clock by about 50MHZ for improved stability.

So GTX is so much more powerful than GS that it overshadows the 7800-7900 difference. Confusing 🤣
If it's dual it's kind of cool ... 😎

Looking at the specs I figured it could go either way but yeah the GTX seems to be faster.
