Motorhead will use the software renderer at best.

The game always launches in 3dfx mode. How can I make it launch in software mode?

You go to the video menu and change the renderer.

It's not in 3dfx mode in the menu by the way.

Have you tried running Motorhead without the Voodoo Graphics installed or using different drivers for your primary card?

I had thought about it, but I haven't tried it. My main 2D graphics card is the Millennium II. How do I get Motorhead to run on the Millennium? I don't remember

The menus will always run on the primary card, but there is a chance that there might be something with the Voodoo Graphics detection/initialization. If your monitor still goes off-sync without the Voodoo Graphics, then it's surely something related to the Millenium II card. There might be a BIOS or driver update that fixes this issue. I'd also look for different Voodoo Graphics drivers as well.

Sorry, but I’m not quite sure I’ve understood – when I launch Motorhead, does it start in 3Dfx mode or via the Millennium? Do I need to configure anything before launching the game to make it run on the Millennium?

Hi,

Game menu is 2D, ran on your primary video card (the Millenium in your case).
The game only switches to the 3D accelerator once the race is starting (either it being a 3Dfx dedicated card like your voodoo 1 or any 2D/3D video card).
In regards to your problem, to rule out the Voodoo card, i'd plug the screen directly to the Millenium see if you see the menu. If it still gets Out of Range error, the Millenium is the problem (video card or drivers, that's to be further tested).

Thanks for your help. I’ve connected the monitor directly to the Millennium, and whenever I launch Motorhead, it always displays the message ‘mode not supported’. Does this mean the problem lies with the Millennium? Could it be a driver issue?

You can try different drivers, or standard VGA driver for the Millennium, see if it changes anything.
I never tinkered with this like if cards, so I have no idea if it could be bios related or drivers related.
If you have a config panel for the card, try to see if you can change default refresh rate on specific resolutions.

I was getting issue with my Matrox Mystique. I just changed the card to a S3 Trio 3D, and the issue no longer happens. So it seems to be a Matrox issue

I have an S3 Trio 64v+. It might not be the best 2D graphics card out there, but I could give it a go
