Hey all,

Usually I'm pretty good with MS-DOS memory optimization but this one is bugging me. I'm only getting 540K free conventional. It's MS-DOS 6.22, WfW 3.11. It's the PCMCIA drivers and the Xircom ethernet card eating it up. If I set it up without those I get 605K free but no internet on WfW 3.11. Memmaker makes it worse at 528K

Here is the AUTOEXEC.BAT

@ECHO OFF

This is no wonder, you have loaded a whole shitload.

Create a menu and load only drivers needed for different operations.

E.g -> Games -> only Sound, CD-Rom.

Replace EMM386.EXE for non-ems Operation with UMBPCI.SYS.
http://www.uwe-sieber.de/umbpci_e.html

if you want EMS without emm386.exe get EMSMAGIC, its now freeware and works without protect mode.
Can be loaded in High Memory and also in Conventional Memory.
And unloaded on demand.
http://www.emsmagic.com/

EMS Magic also works unter 32bit x86 Windows including Win 8 - NTVDM Box.

Do you really need this ?
LH /L:0;1,16400 /S C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X
LH /L:1,6144 DOSKEY

Smartdrv can be replaced by uide.sys, which also enables DMA under MS-DOS.

LH /L:0;1,3328 /S MOUSE
(Only 3Kb ? ah this is not MS Mouse.com ?)

Do you run old DOS Stuff that you need to fake Version Numbers ?
if not you can remove that too.
DEVICEHIGH /L:1,12048 =C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE

Working battery ? 😀
DEVICEHIGH /L:0;2,8112 /S =C:\DOS\POWER.EXE
though i never used this on my T600.

Your Cardservice is pretty hungry, i would only load it if needed.

This will help you too:

3 24,144 (24K) 24,160 (24K) 32,768 (32K)

As for the UMBPCI and other suggestions I'll try those when i have more time after work

Alright I just decided to go with having 2 sets of config.sys + autoexec.bat files, one for Windows 3.11 and networking (PCMCIA card) and one for DOS games. 542K vs. 605K. Over 600K should be plenty for the things I play.. even Doom and Wolftenstein 3D work fine in 542K

You just need One Set, you can make a config menu with config.sys and autoexec.bat 😀
Like on Windows Bootdisc (With CD-Rom, Without CD-Rom...)
