Tech sites often get their review hardware before it's actually available to consumers. For this reason, I don't count hardware as released until it is available to purchase in retail channels. The same article does mention: "The Athlon 800 will make its official shipping introduction sometime in January ... ." Personally, I'd also look into the retail availability of the GeForce256 DDR during that last week in December to determine release.

Then the Pentium-3 800EB shouldn't be included, because it was launched on the exact same day - Dec 20, 1999. Should just go with launch date, unless there is a huge discrepancy between launch and availability.

Alright, few benchmarks from me. For now, only stock results, I will overclock the system in the future, and also finally install XP on it and try it there.

Both systems were identical, just swapped card between runs. Also I benchmark in 32-bit colors full screen (since running in window really tanked the performance, especially on V4), just put it into windowed mode after run because of screenshots.

Running neck and neck with my 9800 Pro. I thought the 6800GT would gain a few FPS because of nVidia's better GL driver, but I guess it's just too CPU-bound to matter.

Here's another PIII. In terms of FPS per MHz, Q3A is showing nearly perfect performance scaling!

That near-perfect scaling I was seeing before just went out the window. The 9800 Pro and XP-SP3 are a little on the heavy side for a 300MHz Klamath, but I used them to keep things consistent.

More scores to report; I upgraded the CPU from PIII-450 to PIII-700 and the RAM from 256 to 512MB and got a.. rather marginal performance boost to 43.5fps, rather disappointing:

I also got like 5720 fps staring at a corner in UT99. 🤣 What a far cry to the days 640x480 HL1 was a slideshow on software rendering with K6-2 500 and barely 30fps @ 1024x768 with a TNT1.

This was on my 4coredual-sata2 board with a core2 x6800@3.2 with 4gigs of ddr2@533 and a radeon x800pro. The x800pro has the full 16 pipelines enabled but its running at x800pro default clocks. I'm running the omega 38413 drivers. I lost about 100fps running the game in a window.

Here is with q3 1.1

Parhelia 512. Default clock is only 207MHz.

One of few games that isn't a slide show on this CPU :

Celeron 2,0GHz (Northwood) + GTX 1080.
