well yeah, did you expect deluxe paint to be paint shop pro? It's an amiga tool from before JPEG and PNG, brought over to work with those indexed color palette formats. And considering the ubiquity of DP's fonts, art, extremely recognizable flood gradients, etc. among commercial games in the west then, it had to be good for something...

From what I recall, Deluxe Paint was the most popular graphics program for Amiga, but not very popular on the PC.
For the PC, Zsoft Paintbrush seemed the #1, and later on there was Neopaint.

And yes - considering that great many games originated on Amiga, it was normal to see stuff from DP even in games for other platforms.

In other words then it is not really IBM compatible and should not of gone on to DOS
If I cant convert the file types in question to PNG and JPEG then I guess i should look at something ells

Thanks! I'll look those 2 up, but with so many corrupt programs out there on the archives sites and other stuff, I would not hold your breath! I mean the Du lux paint that I got is not really real. It was all zip filed together, meaning that you could not write disk one to disk one est. you just had to copy paste to HDD and not even a proper installer came with it

furhtmore; as i said in the OP, i can only open the program in windows and not DOS so no good at all really! (unless someone knows how to do it that is) But i guess that they are just currupt feebee programs that will never work anyway

In video games, DP was used for animation (palette cycling), pixel art (backgrounds etc) and creating character sprites.

The latest versions always were available on Amiga (first).
Maybe that's why Amiga had been prioritized.

While the final DOS version supported SVGA and huge screen resolutions.

Were you seriously expecting a piece of software released in the late 1980s to support JPEG and PNG? Even Deluxe Paint II Enhanced 2.0 pre-dates PNG by several years, because it wasn't invented until late 1990s, and JPEG support was rare in the early '90s.

A lot of DOS programs didn't have installers, because the assumption was that you'd just run it from the (single) floppy disk it came on. Because back then not every system actually had an HDD. So, yes, the "install process" was just to copy the files manually.

The fact it runs under Windows but not DOS makes me think it's some kind of memory manager issue. But then I don't recall DPaint requiring extended/expanded memory...

OP, if you want an old paint program that runs under Windows 3.x/9x that handles common "modern" file formats like JPEG and PNG, then try Paint Shop Pro. IIRC, the 4.x version had PNG support.

And what would you even do with said files on DOS anyway?

Try decoding a JPEG on a DOS era machine and you would see how poorly suited they are.

DosView can convert less formats but it's freeware and has support for newer formats:
